TURLOCK — The Warriors didn't just let the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes come in and roll over them. The Cal State Stanislaus women's volleyball fought hard and made the powerhouse team earn its points before the No. 2 ranked team in the country take the win in four sets.
Jessica Granados had 19 kills and 10 digs and Sara Rice added 10 kills to lead Cal State Bernardino over Stanislaus, 25-12, 24-26, 25-16, 25-12. With the win the Coyotes remain atop of the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings with a 11-2 conference record. CSUSB is 19-2 and ranked No. 2 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
The Warriors (4-19 overall and 1-12 in the CCAA) were led by
Jen Gee with 12 kills and eight digs.
Lianne Vicchio had nine kills and 15 digs and setter
Colleen Sullivan recorded 31 assists. Gee also had two service aces.
After Stanislaus stay close early in the first set at 12-8, CSUSB pullaway on a 12-4 run en route to the win. Granados had five of her kills on eight attempts in the first.
In the second, CSUSB held off two Cal State Stanislaus set-points and tied it at 24-24 before the Warriors managed to pick up the final two points on CSUSB errors. The second was an epic battle with the Warriors holding on to late leads with timely power hitting and blocking up front. Stanislaus had eight total blocks in set two and was led by Gee's five kills.
The Coyotes, a perennial power in Division II women's volleyball, held off a few Warrior offensive surges in the third and fourth and pull away for the win. In the end, CSUSB had a .302 attacking percentage, 57 total digs and 10 team blocks (19 total). Rice also had four blocks and Granados three blocks to add to their totals.
