TURLOCK — Senior
Megan Loghry picked a great night to have a career match. The senior middle hitter from Yuba City led the Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team over Cal State Dominguez Hills in four, 25-12, 22-25, 25-11, 25-19, on Halloween night.
Loghry had 17 kills and six digs -- both career-bests -- and added five total blocks in lead the Warriors as they snapped an eight-match losing streak to improve to 5-20 overall. The Warriors are now 2-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
"Megan played awesome. I really wish she isn't a senior," Stanislaus head coach Chris Lore said. "For a senior to step up during her final home weekend show some great leadership. She has been great as a leader all season long."
Loghry was helped by her teammate
Lianne Vicchio, a freshman from Orangevale. Vicchio also had a nice all-around evening with 13 kills, 11 digs, three blocks and three aces to pace CSUS.
Sophomore
Jen Gee had 12 kills and three aces while setter
Nicki Brown dished 40 assists to go with her 12 digs. Freshman
Angela Ohland chipped in with seven kills.
"It was also nice to see that both Lianne and Jen both with so few hitting errors," Lore said.
The two outside hitters, Vicchio and Gee, had a total of 11 errors as they contributed to the team's effective hitting night. The team had a solid .223 hitting percentage.
Defensive specialists
Amanda Pielstick and
Megan Britton also helped out on the defensive side with 14 and 12 digs, respectively.
"Our defense was solid tonight," Lore added. "As a team, we didn't give up when we were struggling and played through our struggles."
The Warriors handled the Toros easily in the first set with Loghry, Gee and Vicchio each with four kills. Stanislaus let-up a little in the second and the Toros took advantage for a 25-22 set two win.
But from that point on the Warriors rolled until towards the end of the fourth set. Leading 20-12, the Warriors allowed Dominguez Hills (2-21, 1-14 CCAA) to get back in the match with five straight points. After a Stanislaus timeout, the Warriors rallied for five of the final seven points for the win.
Cal State Stanislaus will host No. 13 Cal State L.A. Saturday night. The Warriors will celebrate senior night and recognize Loghry, the only senior on the squad, in a pregame ceremony. First serve is at 7 p.m.
