COME FROM BEHIND…AGAIN
Saturday's 68-66 victory over Grand Canyon marked the fifth time this season the Warriors have made a significant comeback to knock off their opponent. This time the Warriors trailed much of the game and then found themselves down four with under three minutes remaining before they took control of the game and sealed the win. #Gwen Page led the way with 20 points and Lysandra Williams# added 12. However, it was# Katie Busi# who came up big in the final moments of the game. Despite struggling much of the game, she made some key plays in the final minutes to put her team ahead. With 11 seconds left she knocked down the go ahead jumper and then with the Antelopes attempting a game tying shot, Busi rejected the attempt to end the game.
TWO IN TOP THREE SCORING ALL-TIME
Gwen Page and Lysandra Williams currently rank second and third in all-time points scored as a Warrior. Page ranks second with 1,223 points and Williams now ranks third with 965 total points scored. They both are behind the program's all-time lead scorer Shannon Donnelly who dropped in 2,088 points in her career.
GOWAN AND PAGE SHOOTING IT WELL
Christin Gowan is not having a sophomore slump so far this season as she continues to shine in a couple of shooting categories this season. Last season she hit 70 of her 80 free throw attempts (88 percent) to lead the team. This season she has only missed one attempt and leads the CCAA, shooting 94 percent from the line. She also ranks eighth in the CCAA at 39 percent from behind the arc. She shot 36 percent last season from long distance. Gwen Page is also putting up some impressive shooting statistics. She is shooting just under 50 percent from the field and is shooting an astounding 55 percent from three-point land. These numbers have contributed to her being the fourth highest scorer in the CCAA averaging 17.4 points per game.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Warriors are the second highest scoring team in the CCAA, averaging 72.7 points per contest. However, they are ranked 10th in scoring defense, giving up 70 points per game. They rank third in the conference in assists, dishing out 14.4 a game, but are 10th in turnovers averaging 21.4 a contest. The Warriors lead the CCAA in blocked shots per game averaging 5.3, thanks in large part to Katie Busi who has 18 through seven games. And despite Busi leading the conference in both offensive and defensive rebounds per game, the Warriors as a team rank just ninth in rebounding with 37.3 per game.
ALASKAN EXPEDITION
The Warriors' trip to Anchorage, Alaska will be the program's first to the 49th State since the start of the 1999-2000 season when Stanislaus played a pair at Anchorage and another doubleheader at Alaska Fairbanks. The Warriors went 3-1 on the trip, losing two to Anchorage and split with UAF.
HEAT WAVE IN ANCHORAGE
The team will encounter decent weather in Anchorage this week with only light snow shower on Friday with a high of 21 and low of 19 degrees. On Saturday, it will be partly cloudy with a low of 14 degrees and on departure-Sunday, it warms up to a sunny 16 degrees. Not bad for Alaska this time of the year.
HEAD COACH TURNER-DEAN
Sharon Turner-Dean is in her seventh season as the head coach of the Warriors. She is just the fifth head coach in the history of CSUS women's basketball. Since becoming the head coach in 2002, Turner-Dean has posted an overall record of 58-110. In her first season, in 2002-03, the Warriors went 18-10 and tied for second in the CCAA with a 15-7 record.
