TURLOCK — Down two sets to zero, the youthful Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team rebounded and pushed Humboldt State all the way before dropping a thriller Saturday night in Warrior Arena.

After HSU edged the Warriors in game one, and took a 2-0 lead with a solid game two, the Warriors loudly stretched the match to a fifth set before losing 26-24, 25-17, 23-25, 20-25, 15-7. Despite dropping to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, CSUS head coach Christina Lore was pleased with the team's progress after the contest.

"I am proud of how they battled back down 0-2," Lore said. "They rallied back and show a lot of heart."

Sophomore and co-captain Jen Gee swung 48 times and put-away a career-best 17 kills, including a strong set number four with five kills. Freshman Lianne Vicchio chipped in 12 kills and eight digs as the duo of outside hitters led the team on the attack. Sophomore setter Colleen Sullivan had 44 assists and a team-best 14 digs to go with another sophomore Megan Britton's 13.

Freshman middle Angela Ohland also had a career-day with nine kills, as did Karly Penton.

"There are a lot of talent under there with this young team. We just have to put it all together," Lore added.

Down by as many as five points twice in the third, the Warriors stayed close with mini-runs and eventually pushed the match to 19-19 after four straight points capped by a Ohland kill. Humboldt would take the next two points, but CSUS rallied to grab six of the next eight points to end the set on a Gee attack.

In the fourth set, with both teams in a see-saw battle, the Warriors finished strong with five of the final six points to force game five. In the fifth and final set, however, a lack of experience show on the home side as HSU went on a 10-1 run after 3-3 to take control en route to the win.

Humboldt State improved to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA. The Jacks were led by Joliann Arzadon and Mallory Briney each with 10 kills. Dani Nelson had 21 assists and as a team HSU tallied 12 team blocks (18 total).
