Warriors improve to 7-1 at home with win over Cal State L.A.

TURLOCK -- The Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team survived another slow start and rallied for a 63-55 win over Cal State L.A. Friday night at Warrior Arena.

Lysandra Williams had 12 points and Gwen Page pulled 14 rebounds to lead the Warriors as they improved to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State L.A. dropped to 2-12 and 1-6 in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles are now 1-10 in their last 11 games.

Williams also had seven rebounds and Page chipped in seven points. A number of other Warriors also contributed offensively: Samantha Bertomen scored eight points while Nathalie Olveda and Heather Highshoe each chipping in seven. Katie Busi had six points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.

Cal State Stanislaus improved to 7-1 at home this season.

"We come out unfocused and didn't shoot well again," CSUS head coach Sharon Turner-Dean said. "We need to come out and be ready to play."

The Warriors shot just 26.2 percent in the first half but managed to maintain a lead throughout. Cal State Stanislaus led by as many as 9 points in the first half but Cal State L.A. pulled within on a Shyneese Walter three-pointer at 1:28. The halftime score was 30-29 in favor of the Warriors.

The Golden Eagles held a brief 3-point lead at the start of the second half, but the Warriors responded. A Bertomen three-pointer at 15:08 gave the Warriors a 40-37 lead and Stanislaus eventually took control inside the 10:00 to go point on a Williams layup, up 50-42.

Shatori Dearman led L.A. with 14 points. She was 5-for-5 in the first half. Amber Whittington had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Cal State Stanislaus plays host to Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. The CSUDH Toros upset Chico State in Chico Friday night, 63-55.
