TURLOCK — Whether it's something about playing at home or they have just figured something out, either way, the Warriors have Humboldt State's number.
Cal State Stanislaus was powered Friday night by second half goals from
Victor Regalado and
Jio Santana as the Warriors marched to their sixth straight win against the Lumberjacks and a season sweep by a score of 3-1.
The win assures that the Warriors will finish with at least a .500 overall record for only the second time since joining the CCAA in 1998, as they improve to 9-6-1 overall and 6-6-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with three games left to play in the regular season. Humboldt State falls to 5-10-2 overall and 4-8-1 in the CCAA.
Regalado's goal in the 63rd minute adds to his single-season school record total, and allowed him to tie another record. Regalado headed a chip-shot past Lumberjacks 'keeper Kyle Verle off a cross from
Hector Angeles to give the Warriors a 2-0 second half lead. He now has 11 goals this season, the most ever by a Warriors player since Cal State Stanislaus joined the CCAA.
Regalado now has 23 points this season, which ties former Warrior and current Modesto Junior College men's soccer coach Joe Michelena's 1999 total of 23 in a single season. Regalado's 23 points are tied for seventh and his 11 goals are tied for third on the career lists since the Warriors joined the CCAA.
"I thought even though we got off to a fast start, we just didn't have our legs underneath us today," Warriors head coach
Dana Taylor said.
The Warriors got on the board first in the seventh minute on an own goal by Humboldt State. Santana sent in a cross right in front of the goal, and the ball was deflected in by a Lumberjacks defender who was trying to clear the ball out.
The score would stay that way through the first half, despite the Warriors' aggressive efforts. Cal State Stanislaus was called for 14 fouls in the first half, compared to HSU's four. The Warriors would be tabbed for 22 fouls by game's end.
Both teams came out firing in the second half, as each of them more than doubled their shot total from the first half. Cal State Stanislaus, who took four shots in the first half, took 10 shots in the second half. The Lumberjacks went from six shots in the first half to 14 in the second half to outshoot the Warriors for the game, 20-14.
The Lumberjacks finally found net in the 74th minute with the Warriors leading 2-0 after Regalado's goal. A massive traffic jam in front of the net immediately following a Humboldt State corner kick allowed the ball to find Doug Simpson's feet, who put it in to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
Santana, who thought he had a goal earlier in the game, only to have it ruled as an own goal, would not be left out of the scoring. With just over five minutes left on the clock, Santana gathered the ball at the top of the goalkeeper box, turned and fired a hard shot to the top left corner, beating Verle for his fourth goal of the season and a 3-1 Warriors lead.
Javier Rosales made eight saves in the game, including several point-blank ones in the closing minutes of the game. Rosales now has 50 saves this season.
The Warriors will close out their 2009 home schedule Sunday with Senior Day festivities against No. 8 Sonoma State, starting at 3 p.m.
