TURLOCK — A plaque, a single rose, and a game-winning goal over a national top-10 team were
Artemio Arteaga's gifts on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at Warrior Stadium.
Arteaga notched a header goal in the 83rd minute and the Warriors' defense held on for the final seven minutes to shock No. 8 Sonoma State, 1-0, Sunday. The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Warriors against the Seawolves, and it is their first victory over them in four years almost to the day, when the Warriors topped Sonoma State, 4-2, on Oct. 26, 2005.
The ball was kicked out of bounds deep in Sonoma State territory, and the Warriors set up inside the goalkeeper box.
Hector Angeles threw the ball inbounds towards the front of the goal.
Victor Regalado leaped up and headed it, just getting a piece of the ball as it continued to travel behind him — where Arteaga was waiting to head it in past Seawolves 'keeper Brook Johnson.
The victory clinches the Warriors' first winning season since 2006, as they move to 10-6-1 overall and 7-6-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The No. 8 Seawolves fall to 13-3-2 overall and 10-3-1 in the CCAA. It is only the second time Cal State Stanislaus has won 10 games in a season since joining the CCAA in 1998.
"I'm really happy for our seniors and our team today," Warriors head coach
Dana Taylor said.
The goal was Arteaga's first of the season and sixth of his career. It was also his first goal since 2007 after not scoring any goals last season, playing mainly as a defensive midfielder. Regalado notched his second assist of the year in getting a piece of the ball to give him 24 points on the season.
Regalado's 24 points set a new Cal State Stanislaus single-season record in the CCAA era. He surpassed former Warrior and current Modesto Junior College men's soccer head coach Joe Michelena's 23 points in 1999.
The Warriors controlled the ball from the outset Sunday, keeping the ball in Sonoma State territory for nearly the entire first half. At one point, the Warriors were outshooting the Seawolves 9-0 before Sonoma State got their offense going and finished the first half with two shots.
Despite only two shots, the Seawolves had an opportunity to take a 1-0 lead right before halftime. Brandon De La Cruz dribbled the ball towards the goal in a one-on-one situation against Warriors' goalkeeper
Javier Rosales with 1 minute, 45 seconds left on the clock. Rosales charged and made a sliding kick save at the top of the 'keeper box to preserve the scoreless tie in the first half.
"I thought in the first half we stuck to the game plan," Taylor said. "In the second half, credit needs to be given to Sonoma. They came out and took over the game."
The Seawolves would fire three times as many shots in the second half as they did in the first, but only one was on goal and saved by Rosales. Both Sonoma State and the Warriors stepped up the aggressiveness in the second half, resulting in 17 fouls called and five yellow cards issued.
"Our guys were relentless in our attack and the shot line showed that," Taylor said. "I was happy with the quantity and quality of the shots we took today."
The Warriors ended the game having outshot the Seawolves 25-8. It is the second-most shots the Warriors have taken in a regulation game this season. They took 26 shots against George Fox University on Sept. 3. They also took 25 shots in a double-overtime, 3-3, tie against San Francisco State on Oct. 2.
The Warriors head out on the road next weekend to wrap up the 2009 regular season. Friday, the team will face Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside at 3 p.m. Sunday the team travels to San Francisco to take on the San Francisco State Gators starting at 11:30 a.m.
