ROHNERT PARK -- After dropping the season opener Friday afternoon, the Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team rebounded quickly to earn its first win of the season later in the day.
Melissa Bishop and
Jessica Lehner led the Warriors (2-0) over Notre Dame de Namur in four games in the afternoon match. Earlier in the day, Northwest Nazarene downed Stanislaus in four to start the Seawolf Spike hosted by Sonoma State.
"It wasn't that pretty during the match, the team struggled but didn't panic," CSUS head coach
Christina Lore said. "(The Warriors) kept their composure and pulled it out."
Against NDNU, the Warriors also rebounded within the contest after losing the first game 25-18. Stanislaus turned it around to win 25-17, 25-20 and 27-25 for the first victory of the 2009 season.
Bishop, a freshman middle hitter from Fair Oaks, led all Warriors with 13 kills. Lehner, part of the team's three-setter rotation, made her collegiate debut with 38 assists. Lehner, a freshman from Loomis, also had 13 digs.
Megan Britton had six service aces to pace Stanislaus.
"We have to give credit to the setters for moving the ball around," Lore said. "It's not about the freshmen or about the returners, but it's about everybody working together."
Andrea Fett (Fr., Poway) and
Lianne Vicchio (So., Fair Oaks) chipped in 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Vicchio also had 15 digs while Fett and Bishop each added three blocks.
In the opener, Northwest Nazarene handled the Warriors, 25-6, 24-26, 25-17, 25-15.
Janay Bankston led Stanislaus with 15 kills while
Colleen Sullivan had 29 assists.
Amanda Pielstick led the defense with 17 digs. Bishop had six kills and Vicchio added five kills and 13 digs.
"(NNU) is a very good and experienced team. We played as hard as we could against a group that has been playing together much longer than we have," Lore said.
