TURLOCK -- There has been something special about each and every home game for the Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team this season.
Jose Velasquez scored the game-winning goal in the 67th minute, his second of the game, which was just what the team needed to earn its fifth-straight home win and a weekend sweep with a 3-2 victory over Cal State East Bay at Warrior Stadium.
The win moves the Warriors to 6-2-0 overall and 3-2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Pioneers fall to 1-7-0 overall and 0-4-0 in the CCAA. The Warriors are undefeated at home in 2009 with a perfect 5-0-0 record.
The Warriors' unblemished 5-0-0 stretch at home to start the season is the team's best unbeaten home stretch since joining the CCAA in 1998. The previous best was a 3-0-1 streak in 2004.
In the 36th minute,
Victor Regalado, already the CCAA's leading scorer and with two goals notched on Friday, tied the Warriors' single-season record for goals with his ninth goal of the year on a rebound that was not controlled by Cal State East Bay goalkeeper Billy Morales.
The goal put the Warriors up 2-0, a lead they would hold through the first half.
Andrew Ruiz was credited with the assist after almost doing the scoring himself, only to have his shot stopped by Morales.
Regalado's nine goals are tied with Joe Michelena, who also scored nine goals in 1999. Regalado is tied with four other players for fifth on the career goals list with nine. The record is 14 goals, which Dennis Wolfe accumulated in 2003 and 2005-07.
Velasquez's deciding goal came with 23 minutes left on the clock.
Oscar Ramirez hooked a corner kick to the far side of the box.
Trevor Grimbleby headed the ball straight to Velasquez, who chipped it in for his fourth goal of the year, second of the game, to give the Warriors a decisive 3-2 advantage.
Velasquez put the Warriors on the board in the 24th minute with a diving header off a cross from
Nolan Holdridge, giving the team a 1-0 lead over the Pioneers.
Cal State East Bay would not go down without a fight, scoring two straight goals early in the second half to tie the score at 2-2. The Pioneers' first goal came off the foot of Alex Dickerson in the 56th minute, who created space for himself in the goalkeeper box and shot hard and high for his first goal of the season.
Cal State East Bay tied the score three minutes later when Arnoldo Mendoza chipped an indirect free kick over the Warriors' defensive wall and found Tyler Anderson, who booted it in for his first score of the year.
The Warriors head out on the road next week on perhaps their toughest test of the season. Friday, the team will face defending national champion Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson. Sunday the Warriors will head to Los Angeles to take on undefeated No. 4-ranked Cal State LA.
