LOS ANGELES -- Sunday, the Warriors tried their hand at handing undefeated and No. 3-ranked Cal State L.A. its first loss of the season, and they succumbed to the same fate that eight other teams have already fallen into this season.
The Golden Eagles used strong defense and a goal midway through the first half, along with another goal 2 1/2 minutes into the second, to come away with a 2-0 home win over Cal State Stanislaus at Jesse Owens Stadium.
Cal State L.A. is now 9-0-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with the win. The Warriors fall to 6-4-0 overall and 3-4-0 in the CCAA. All four of Cal State Stanislaus' losses this season have come on the road against conference opponents.
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute off a corner kick. Federico Cino scored his sixth goal of the season after getting help from Mauricio Barrett and Mickey Daly. The score would stay 1-0 through halftime.
At 47 minutes, 36 seconds in the game, just 2:36 into the second half, Spencer Tripp gathered a pass from Chris Rangel and fired a shot from inside the goalkeeper box to beat Warriors 'keeper
Javier Rosales. The goal was Tripp's first of the season and put Cal State L.A. up 2-0, a score that would stand until the final whistle.
"We just didn't bring it the way we did against Dominguez Hills," said Cal State Stanislaus head coach
Dana Taylor. "We didn't bring the collective effort we needed to on the day, period. We missed one opportunity in the first 15 minutes of the game, but overall we lacked energy and didn't bring a collective effort."
The Warriors were outshot by Cal State L.A., 17-7, including 10-3 in the first half.
Artemio Arteaga and
Bladimir Murillo each led the Warriors with two shots and one shot on goal. Rosales had five saves.
Cal State Stanislaus returns to Warrior Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday to host the San Francisco State Gators for the first game of a three-game homestand.
