Pomona uses O-boards to slip by Warriors

URLOCK — Cal Poly Pomona was able to have many do-overs with its scoring chances as the Broncos tallied 27 offensive rebounds to edged Cal State Stanislaus, 58-52, in women's basketball Saturday afternoon.

Katie Busi had 17 points and 14 rebounds and Alishea Kelly added 18 points, four blocked shots and four steals to lead Stanislaus, which fell to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Samantha Bertomen chipped in 10 points for the Warriors.

Cal Poly Pomona got 20 points from Reyana Colson and 13 points, 12 rebounds from Megan Ford to improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Ford had nine of the Broncos' offensive rebounds while Stephisha Walton grabbed eight offensive boards for a total of 12.

Cal State Stanislaus recovered from an 0-for-9 start shooting from the floor to lead by as many as seven points with 5:43 to go in the first half when Bertomen nailed a three-pointer. Pomona was able to hang close and tied the score at 23 a piece with 43 second left before intermission.

Nathalie Olveda managed to lay-in a bucket at the buzzer to give the Warriors a 25-23 lead at the break.

The second half started evenly, but after a Kelly score at 14:39 to give CSUS a 33-31 lead, the Broncos went on a 15-0 run during a five-minute spurt for a 13-point, 46-33, advantage.

Stanislaus would rally back and pulled within three, 49-46 at 1:55, on a long Christin Gowan three-pointer. However, Cal Poly Pomona nailed five free throws in the final 44 seconds of the game to hold on to win.

Pomona shot just 21.6 percent in the first half but was helped by 16 offensive rebounds. For the contest, CPP out-rebounds Stanislaus 53-36 overall. The Broncos shot just 27.9 percent for the entire contest (19-for-68).

The Warriors will play host to Cal State San Bernardino Sunday afternoon to try and snap the five-game skid. Tipoff is at 12:30 p.m. CSUSB lost at Chico State, 78-51, Saturday.
