Offensive showdown ends with 4-4 draw

TURLOCK -- The Warriors got into an offensive showdown with visiting Western Washington as the thrilling match ended in a 4-4 draw Saturday night at Warrior Stadium.

Brady Marshall and Terry Gross gave the Warrior an early 2-0 lead but WWU scored four unanswered goals for a 4-2 lead into the second half.

The Warriors battled back with goals by Edwardo Meza and Victor Regalado -- with the latter coming in in the 86th minute to send the match into extra time.

With Stanislaus (0-0-1) taking control early, Marshall netted the first goal for the Warriors at 12:58 when he dribbled in front and beat Vikings goalkeeper Christian Warman for a 1-0 lead. Marshall's goal was set up by a throw in by Gross.

Gross got in on the action himself exactly nine minutes later with his first score of the year assisted by Jio Santana.

Western Washington responded right back, however, with a penalty kick opportunity. Oscar Jimenez's PK try was stabbed by Warrior keeper Bill Hambelton but the rebound went right to Jimenez who finished it off to get WWU on the board.

That seemed to spirited the Vikings as they scored another to tie the match going into intermission.

Out of the gate in the second half, Justin Moore and Jin daangvan each scored to give the Vikings a 4-2 advantage by the time the 63rd minute rolled around.

In the 67th minute, a Schad TenBroeck throw-in from the far side bounced off a defender, centering the ball at the top of the box, where Edwardo Meza took a hard shot to get the Warriors within one.

Regalado, the Warriors' leading scorer in 2009, equalized the match at 85:07 to sent the contest into overtime.

Both teams had opportunities in the extra time including a couple of great chances by Regalado and Santana in the scond overtime.

In the end, the Warriors outshot WWU, 20-14 with a 14-6 corner kick advantage.Hambelton had three saves.

Stanislaus plays host to Bethany University on Monday with the kickoff at 7 p.m.
