TURLOCK — UC San Diego went nuts shooting three-pointers in the first half and had to hold off a furious Cal State Stanislaus second half comeback before claiming an 86-80 win Saturday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.
Chelsea Carlise scored 31 points to lead the Tritons to their fourth straight win as UCSD improved to 8-7 overall and 6-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. UC San Diego made 11 three-pointers, including eight straight at one point in the first half.
Andreanna Marshall led the Warriors with 26 points,
Christin Gowan had 16 and
Katie Busi scored 13 with 10 rebounds to pace Cal State Stanislaus (7-5, 5-3 CCAA). The Warriors, however, snapped a five-game win-streak against CCAA opponents but are still 10-3 in their last 13 conference games dating back the end of last season.
"We had some lack of focus in the first half as we did last night and once we stop doing that we will win games," Stanislaus head coach Sharon Turner said.
After hitting one of their first two three-point attempts, the Tritons collectively caught fire from behind the arch. During a 13-minute span, UC San Diego nailed eight straight three-pointers, and at one point led by as many as 19 points.
Still the Warriors hung close and trailed 47-31 at the break and used an early second half run and got within six, 51-45, four minutes in.
"We came out after the first half with more pride and played like we wanted to win," Turner said.
A tight battled ensued while the Tritons became human and missed numerous three-pointers and jumpers. Eventually a
Jameiz Terrell jumper at 8:49 got the Warriors back within one.
Leading by the slightest margin of one with less than three minutes left, Daisey Feder made back to back three-pointers for UC San Diego -- the team's firsts in the second half -- to give her team a 7-point, 78-71, advantage.
Cal State Stanislaus turned the ball over a couple of possessions in a row and UC San Diego converted on its free throw attempts down the stretch for the final count.
"We made some mistakes that prevented us from winning," Turner added. "We have to be more disciplined."
Carlisle, who scored 26 points Friday against Chico State, also had seven assists, six steals and six rebounds for UC San Diego. Feder finished with nine points on three three-pointers.
The Warriors will have to regroup and hit the road next weekend when they travel to Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino. Both teams are currently in the top four spots in the CCAA standings.
