TURLOCK — When two teams with long losing streaks square-off, someone has to snap out of the funk. Fortunately for Warrior Nation, it was the Warriors as they rallied from down 0-2 to beat Cal State Monterey Bay in an exciting volleyball match Saturday night.
Cal State Stanislaus dropped the first two sets and rallied from behind to win set number three en route to the huge comeback victory, 18-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-21, 15-8. The Warriors end a five-match losing skid and are now 7-6 overall and 3-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
For the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters, their streak is now seven consecutive losses as they fell to 5-7 overall and 2-7 in the CCAA despite 28 kills from Rheann Fall.
Lianne Vicchio, who struggled early but got stronger after the second set, led the Warriors with a career-high 23 kills and 21 digs. It was her first 20-20 match and the fifth 20-kill match of her career. Vicchio had six attacking errors in the first two sets, but those were all of her errors on the night. In sets three through five, Vicchio went 13-for-34 without a mistake or an attempt blocked.
But of course it took a team effort for the long rally back from down 0-2.
Libero
Jaclyn Pinasco, who was making just her third career start, picked up a match-high (and obviously her career high) 34 digs to assist with the brillant defensive effort displayed by the Warriors. Pinasco's 34 digs is just one shy of the school record of 35 set on Sept. 1, 2007, by
Megan Britton at BYU Hawaii.
Eva Chafeh carried the team in the early sets with nine of her 18 kills in the first two periods. Chafeh tied her career-best of 18 kills -- the last time she did that was also against CSU Monterey Bay (last Nov. 11).
Once the offense starting clicking,
Jessica Lehner was dishing out the assists. The junior setter finished with 52 assists -- the second time this season she's in the 50s. Her career best was 58, which came last Nov. 11 at CSU Monterey Bay. Lehner also turned in a career-high 11 kills Saturday night.
In the critical third set, trailing 0-2, the Warriors found themselves down 7-1 to start the period. But they rallied behind Lehner's surprise attacks, the return of the All-CCAA performer in Vicchio, great defensive plays and some Otter attacking errors. Chafeh gave CSUS a set point with a kill to make it 24-23, but an attacking error tied it up. Chafeh, however, came right back with another strong put-away and a CSUMB error later gave Stanislaus the 26-24 win to force set No. 4.
Stanislaus never trailed again, controlling the fourth set and eventually won 25-21 on a
Jennifer Marsh kill after CSUMB held off three Stanislaus set-points.
The Warriors were dominate in the fifth and decisive set, jumping out to a 10-3 lead. Against CSUMB held off three set-points but Vicchio finally ended the night with her 23rd kill.
Marsh finished with 10 kills while four different players had two sevices aces each. In all, the Warriors had 10 aces and out-dug CSUMB, 84-73.
Fall led CSUMB with 28 kills and 15 digs. She attempted 72 attacks with 10 errors. Melanie Lashbrook had 11 kills and no one else on the Otter team had five or more kills. LIbero Dionna Lucas had 22 digs.
