TURLOCK — It was certainly two completely different halves of soccer action at Warrior Stadium on Sunday. The Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team rallied from down 3-0 with four second half goals to beat Sonoma State, 4-3.
Jose Velazquez scored twice, including the equalizer, and assisted on a goal to lead the Warriors all the way back for the crucial victory. With the win, Cal State Stanislaus stay in the tight four-team race atop of the CCAA North standings.
First place Sonoma State's lead is just now one point after Sunday with Chico State winning 2-0 over Humboldt State. SSU (6-4, 5-3 CCAA) has 15 points and Chico State 14. The Warriors (6-3-1, 4-3-1 CCAA) and Cal State Monterey Bay are tied for third with 13 points.
Sonoma State jumped all-over the Warriors with three scores in the match's first 16 minutes of play. Michel Arroyo scored twice -- in the fourth and 12th minute -- to give the Seawolves a quick 2-0 lead. Taylor Varnadore tagged on a third at 15:51 to give them a 3-0 advantage.
But it was a complete 180 in the second half.
The Warriors came out on fire, with much-quicker steps as they show in the first half. This perhaps was due to the fact that Sonoma State last played on Thursday. Cal State Stanislaus was coming off a grueling, physical contest at Chico State on Friday.
Paul Oei got the Warriors on the board with a 20-yard blast from the far side. The play was nicely set up by a long service from
Julian O'Dell from just in front of his team bench to the upper part of the box. Velazquez toched backwards to Oei, who scored his first collegiate goal on the blast to the far-right post.
That seemed to energized the Warriors as they continue to stay on the attack without giving the Seawolves much of a chance for long possessions.
In the 54th minute, Velazquez bent a corner kick from the far corner flag over everyone into the right upper corner of the goal for a 3-2 game.
The Stanislaus attack was ferocious at one point during a two-minute span between the 76th and 78th minutes. Four close-range shots were taken with three consecutive corner kicks during that time. Sonoma State defenders had to bail out goalie Andrew Ball twice during that sequence of plays.
Finally in the 79th minute, on another set play, Velazquez took a free kick 24 yards out into the goal to even the score in the 79th minute.
With fresh set of legs,
Daniel Kuczynski came off bench to deliver the game-winner in the 85th minute. Kuczynski, who entered the match for the first time in the 66th minute, collected a
Nolan Holdridge throw-in in front of the goalkeeper and knocked it in for the eventual winner.
Cal State Stanislaus out-shot Sonoma State, 12-5, in the second half after being out-done 7-4 in the opening half.
Other than the three early goals allowed, CSUS goalkeeper BIll Hambelton wasn't really tested after that with SSU only managed one shot-on-goal, which came in the 64th minute, for the rest of the match.
