TURLOCK — The worst thing that happened for the Warriors was the intermission Saturday night. Playing amazing volleyball in the first two sets, Cal State Stanislaus saw No. 18 UC San Diego rallied all the way back to escape with a five-set win.

On Halloween night at Fitzpatrick Arena, Cal State Stanislaus beat down the highly regarded Tritons all over the place in the first two sets before falling to 9-12 overall and 5-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Lianne Vicchio had another double-double with 17 kills and 19 digs (52nd in her career) but it was Jennifer Marsh who shined early. Marsh had 10 kills in the first three sets and finished with 15 kills.

Jaclyn Pinasco led the Warriors' defensive effor with 20 digs with Kayla Giles turning in 17 digs and Jessica Lehner 11. Lehner also had seven kills and 43 assists. Janay Bankston also had seven kills.

UC San Diego, the 18th ranked team in this week's AVCA coaches top 25, improved to 17-4 overall and 13-4 in the CCAA after the 22-25, 20-25, 25-11, 25-15, 15-9 win.

But for a while, the Warriors were poised to pull off an upset. Cal State Stanislaus used an balanced attack in set number one for a 25-22 win that was helped by a couple of UCSD attacking errors. The set was eventually capped by a Marsh kill.

In set two, Stanislaus jumped out to an 8-1 lead and never trailed to win by five, 25-20. Marsh had five of her kills in that set with Vicchio chipping in four. The Warriors also played defense at the net with six total blocks led by Jacqueline Moore-DesLauriers' three assisted blocks.

But the Warriors' momentum was stopped by the 10-minute intermission break betweens sets two and three.

Perhaps they finally realized what was going on and caught a breather, or perhaps they were lectured by their coaches, the Tritons came out on fire in set three. UCSD led at 6-1 and at 16-9, the Tritons rolled off eight of the next nine points for a 24-10 lead. A service error gave the Warriors a sideout, but UCSD finished off the set with a Roxanne Brunsting kill.

Set four was more or less the same with UCSD taking an early 6-1 lead. A 5-0 run in the middle of the set made it 17-7 and the Tritons never looked back.

The fifth and decisive set was much closer than the final score indicated. The Warriors were within a point at 9-8, but a couple of CSUS errors and an UCSD ace made it 11-8. The Tritions then scored three of the final four points that ended with kills by Brunsting and Lauren Demos.

Katie Condon finished with 17 kills, 22 digs, two aces and four block assists to lead UC San Diego. Brunsting finished with 13 kills and 19 digs and Hillary Williams had 12 kills and 13 digs. Demos led UCSD with seven total blocks while the Tritons finished with 22 total blocks (all assisted).
