TURLOCK — Despite a career game for
Theresa Henderson, the Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team opened the 2011-12 campaign with a 74-61 setback to Chico State on Tuesday.
Henderson tied her career high with 17 points and a career-best 15 rebounds for her first double-double to lead the Warriors. Chico State was led by Jazmine Miller, who also scored 17 points.
Tuesday night's California Collegiate Athletic Association game at the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena was the regular season opener for both teams.
Jameiz Terrell chipped in 14 points, including two of the team's seven three-pointers, while
Lauren Godde had eight points and seven rebounds.
The Warriors hung in the match in the first half against a Wildcat team that was picked to finish third in the preseason poll of CCAA head coaches. Stanislaus, which was picked 11th, and Chico State battled evenly with the biggest lead at four by the visitors for most of the half.
Chico State did put together a run to built a 7-point, 30-23, lead on a Sharon Washington layout with four to play. However, the Warriors scored 8 of the next 10 points with three pointers by
Briana Cotton and
Rosa Tirado plus a pair of Tirado free throws to make it 32-31.
Cotton finished with 10 points in her collegiate debut after she led the team with 26 points in an exhibition contest against UC Merced on Nov. 2.
With a two-point lead coming out of the break, the Wildcats pulled away with a 22-8 run in nine minutes of play for a commanding 16-point advantage.
The Wildcats managed to do this by out-rebounding the Warriors (40-27 for the game) and shot a solid 50.9 percent from the field. Stanislaus, on the other hand, shot just 30.4 percent.
Synchro Bulls chipped in 12 points and Crystal Sewell ahd 10 off the bench for Chico State.
