TURLOCK — Many Warrior scoring opportunities were denied down the stretch before a late Golden Eagle goal as Cal State L.A. edged Cal State Stanislaus, 2-1, in a CCAA Championship semifinal match on Friday.
Sergio Cedano nipped the ball into the net on a three-player collison with 4:39 left to play to help second-seed Cal State L.A. advance to Sunday's Championship match against Chico State. The Men's Soccer Championship is slated for 2 p.m., following the women's title match.
For the Warriors, their first tournament appearance since 2006 ended after one match as they are now 11-6-2. The loss was just the team's second in 10 matches played at home this season.
Cal State L.A., now 13-1-5, has won five straight and are unbeated in their last 11 matches (8-0-3).
Cal State Stanislaus tied the match in the 68th minute on a goal by
Juan Alvarez when he picked up a
Kyle Cadigan's shot that was blocked by a Cal State L.A. defender. After that scoring chances were aplenty still for the Warriors as they out-blasted the Golden Eagles 12-6 on shots in the second half.
During a stretch of time, Stanislaus had a shot going off the post and a couple of diving saves by Waleed Cassis, the L.A. goalkeeper.
Austin Schwalbach hit the post in the 80th minute sandwiched by
Jose Velazquez shots that went high. Then
Kyle Cadigan's header in the 85th minute was picked up by Cassis.
Cal State L.A. had gone up 1-0 in the first half on a Jason Swope goal at 24:41 as the Golden Eagles out-shot the Warriors, 10-5. The score snapped a streak of 449 minutes of not allowing a goal by the Warrior defense and goalkeeper
Bill Hambelton.
Hambelton was superb in goal. The first-team All-Conference pick earned eight saves, with six in the first half, to go with two team saves for the Warriors.
The Golden Eagles played a man-down for 54 minutes of the match after junior forward Rosario Bras was issued a red card at 36:22 for kicking a Warrior in the head while he was down.
Cal State Stanislaus will have wait to hear about their fate on Monday to see whether they will advance to the NCAA tournament next week. Cal State Stanislaus entered the weekend ranked No. 6 in the West and only the top four teams move on.
If the season ends for the Warriors, it would be their third straight winning season as they tied for the best record in program history. The 2009 team, during head coach
Dana Taylor's first year at CSU Stanislaus, also went 11-6-2 overall.
