The CCAA/PacWest Challenge
This edition of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge at San Francisco State features the same teams from a year ago as the Warriors will again face Pacifc West Conference teams Grand Canyon and Notre Dame de Namur … The Warriors beat NDNU in overtime last year at this event before falling to the Antelops of Grand Canyon … Dominican hosted a CCAA/PacWest Challenge earlier in the year with Humboldt State, Cal State East Bay and Academy of Art playing in that tournament.
Last Week
Two tough road games last weekend resulted in two Stanislaus setbacks as the Warriors fell to No. 12 Cal Poly Pomona, 81-56, on Thursday and couldn't recover against San Francisco State with a 72-62 loss on Saturday.
Henderson Leads CCAA
Teresa Henderson continues to put up big scoring numbers as the senior scored 41 points in two games on the road last week. She now leads the California Collegiate Athletic Association in scoring with 18.8 per games overall … In other categories, Henderson is second in rebounds per game (9.6), eighth in offensive rebounds (3.0 per game) and second with 6.6 defensive rebounds per game.
Keep on Shootin' T!
Theresa Henderson was 17-for-32 in two contests last weekend for an efficient shooting percentage of .531. She accounted for 40.4 percent of the team's field goals (she's taken 30 more shots than the next Warrior) and 34.7 percent of the team's points.
Cotton's Best Game, So Far
Freshman
Briana Cotton continues to provide a spark off the bench, especially on Saturday. Cotton had her career-best game thus far with 12 points, three rebounds and two steals. She nailed four of the team's eight three-pointers on seven attempts.
Struggles Continued Away From Home
Traditionally, Stanislaus teams have not fared well on the road during the CCAA season and the 2011-12 squad started out 0-2 on the road this season. Since joining the CCAA in 1998, the Warriors are 34-83 in conference road games (38-98 overall).
Rebounding Woes
Despite being among the conference's better rebounding teams early this season, the Warriors were out-rebounded last weekend. Cal Poly Pomona out-rebounded Cal State Stanislaus, 50-27 and San Francisco State edged the Warriors, 40-36 … For the season now, the Warriors have a -2.4 rebounding margin through five games.
Top Rebounder
Lauren Godde leads the conference with 10.4 rebounds per game in all games. She pulled 18 more rebounds in two games last week and now has 52 for the season.
Hitting the Treys
Cal State Stanislaus now ranks third in the CCAA in three-point shooting percentage, hitting 36.8 percent of their long bombs. Led by
Briana Cotton with four, the Warriors converted on 8 of 20 (.400) on Saturday at San Francisco State.
Jameiz Terrell had two of the other triples.
Handling the Rock
Maybe it's the first road trip, nerves, or a little bit of inexperience, but the Warriors turned the ball over early and often on the trip. They accumulated 40 turnovers in two games after just 58 in the first three games. They now average 19.6 TOs per game.
Head Coach Sharon Turner
Sharon Turner entered her 10th season as the Warriors' head coach with a career record of 88-154. In her first season, in 2004-05, she led the Warriors to an NCAA Tournament apperance. In 2008-09, the Warriors qualified for the CCAA Championship tournament for the first time. She has taken the Warriors to the CCAA Championship tournament two out of the last three years (missing the turnament in 2010 due to tiebreakers). Last year was her most successful conference season since 2002-03 as the Warriors posted an 11-11 CCAA mark.
Fitzpatrick Arena
Warrior Arena was renamed Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena at the start the 2010-11 season. The arena is named for Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick, owners of Valley Lexus/Valley BMW in Modesto and other car dealerships in the Bay Area. The Fitzpatricks have been long-time supporters of CSU Stanislaus. The gym has been named Warrior Arena since 1999, 21 years after it was built.
CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll
After making the tournament for the second time in the three years, the Warriors start the 2011-12 campaign low on the coaches radar. In a vote of the conference's head coaches, the Warriors were predicted to finish 11th in 2011-12.
CCAA Basketball Championships
The 2012 CCAA Men's & Women's Basketball Championship tournament will be held at the beginning of March. Eight teams qualify for the event with first round games on campus site Feb. 28. The four winners will advance to the semifinals and finals, March 2-3, in La Jolla on the campus of UC San Diego. The winner of the tournament would receive the automatic bid for the NCAA tournament.
