La Jolla – The Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team was unable to capture a win against UC San Diego Thursday night, falling 76-68 to the Tritons in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest.
The Warriors have fallen to seventh in the CCAA with a 9-8 record, 11-10 overall. The UC San Diego Tritons improve to 13-4 in the CCAA, 15-9 overall. The Tritons remain fourth in the CCAA standings.
Christin Gowan led the Warriors with 20 points, shooting 8-for-15 from the floor, 2-for-5 from the arch, and 2-for-2 from the foul line. Gowan also led her team with seven assists.
The first half was a close battle between the Warriors and Tritons, but UC San Diego came out strong on their home court taking an early lead. Stanislaus took their first solid lead of 18-14 at 7:47. Although the Tritons fought hard to take the lead once again, the Warriors held them off the rest of the half, with a first halff lead of 30-29.
Stanislaus maintained their lead into the second half, but UC San Diego came out stronger than the first half. The Tritons took the lead once again at 35-34 at 16:15 after a three-pointer by Chelsea Carlisle. UCSD then used a 7-0 run to extend its lead. The score was tied three more times throughout the second half and the Warriors came within two points late in the game, but the Tritons ended up on top.
In addition to Gowan's double-digit night, three Warriors also had strong offensive showing.
Katie Busi and
Andreanna Marshall each had 15 points and
Theresa Henderson chipped in 10.
Busi also led Stanislaus defensively with 10 rebounds, nine defensive boards, and four steals.
Carlisle was held to 19 points by the Warriors, 5-for-17 from the floor, 4-for-6 from the arch, and 5-for-7 from the foul line. In the previous meeting this season Carlisle recorded 31 points against Cal State Stanislaus.
Lauren Freidenberg was the only other player for UC San Diego with double digit points, scoring 14 points from the floor. Freidenberg also led her team with seven rebounds.
Saturday, the Warriors will be traveling to Hayward to take on Cal State East Bay. Tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
