San Francisco – The Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball split the season series against the San Francisco Gators after a 73-70 loss, Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest.
The CCAA tournament bound Warriors fall to 11-10, 13-12 overall. Cal State Stanislaus is now in a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference standings, along with Chico State and Humboldt State. San Francisco State improves to 6-15 in the CCAA and 6-19 overall. The Gators hopes for CCAA berth is still in reach, currently only one game back from tying Sonoma State for eighth place.
Christin Gowan led the Warriors with 16 points and recorded six assists for her third consecutive game.
The Warriors took an early lead over the Gators which lasted seven minutes into the first half. From 13:47 to 8:19 both teams battled for the lead, with a tie score seven times within the five and a half minutes of play. San Francisco State eventually took the largest lead of nine points with 4:55 left in the first half after a jumper by Gators, Erica Greer. The Gators finished the first half up on the Warriors with a 39-33 lead.
San Francisco State took their lead well into the second half never allowing the Warriors to regain the lead. The Warriors held the Gators to no more than a nine point lead the entire game, but could not pull off the win.
The San Francisco Gators have proven to be dominant at home only losing last Friday against the CCAA sixth ranked Humboldt State by one, after the Lumberjacks scored from on a tip-in by Bree Halsey at the buzzer. The Gators then took down Sonoma State the next night at their home court.
Although the Warriors forced 21 Gator turnovers to their 14 turnovers, they were out-shot and out-rebounded by SFSU.
Katie Busi bounced right back with 15 points and 8 rebounds after missing last Saturdays contest against Cal Poly Pomona due to an ankle injury.
Also contributing in the Stanislaus' efforts was
Theresa Henderson with 11 points, followed by
Lauren Godde with nine points.
Nicole Hicks led the Gators to victory with 26 points. Dominique Hunter led defensively with 18 rebounds in addition to 18 points for San Francisco.
The Warriors will look to end regular season play on positive note tomorrow night, in hopes of defeating the CCAA leader Cal State Monterey Bay. Tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
