CARSON — Facing its third straight nationally ranked team, the Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team came out on top on Sunday as the Warriors blanked No. 23 Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0.
Manny Avila's early goal in the first half held up as the Warrior defense locked down the Toros attack as Cal State Stanislaus beat Dominguez Hills for the first time. The Warriors, 1-1 on the road trip, improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The Warriors were coming off two setbacks against No. 14 Chico State last Sunday and a 2-1 overtime loss at No. 10 Cal State L.A. on Friday.
Cal State Dominguez Hills lost both contests this weekend and fell to 3-2-1, 1-2-1 CCAA.
Sunday's contest was a match of defenses as neither team gave up much to the opposing attacks. Avila broke through for the Warriors in the 24th minute finishing on a cross sent into the box by
Nolan Holdridge to put Stanislaus up 1-0.
That score would hold up largely due to the strong defense of the Warriors. Stanislaus allowed just five CSUDH shots. The Toros' were held to just one shot in the first half and their second attempt was 19 minutes into the second half.
Cal State Stanislaus had just two shots in the first half, including the Avila score. Then the Warriors held their possessions, played solid defense and held on for the victory.
In the end, the Warriors out-shot CSUDH 6-5. Cal State Stanislaus was called for 25 fouls against CSUDH's 11.
