TURLOCK — With a balanced offensive attack, the Chico State volleyball team came away with a victory over Cal State Stanislaus Wednesday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.
Led by four players with at least seven kills each, the visiting Wildcats defeated the Warriors in three, 26-24, 25-18, 25-15. Chico State beat Stanislaus for the first time in three tries after the Warriors swept the series in 2010.
With the setback, Cal State Stanislaus falls to 6-5 overall and 2-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Chico State is now 10-3 and 5-2 in the CCAA.
Lianne Vicchio led the Warriors with 11 kills and seven digs while
Eva Chafeh chipped in seven kills. Libero
Jaclyn Pinasco, making her first career start, led the team with 12 digs.
Kayla Giles also helped out with nine digs.
However, the aggressive serving style of the Stanislaus team also hurt the Warriors. While the Warriors gained six points on service aces, they also surrendered 13 with service errors.
A critical error came near the end of the first set that stopped a tremendous Stanislaus rally. Facing set-point at 24-19, the Warriors rallied for five straight points -- including three Vicchio kills -- to tie the score at 24-24. The next CSUS serve, however, went long to end the rally to give Chico State another set point. Jacqueline Johnson had one of her seven kills to end the first set.
Makenzie Snyder led Chico State with 10 kills. Jessica Leek added nine while Lindsay Quigley and Johnson each chipped in with seven kills. Only one other Wildcat recorded kills with Alex Shurtz putting away five.
Chico State also had more digs, 51 to 38 and hit at a .228 clip (38 for 101 with 15 errors) versus Stanislaus's .076 percentage.
Cal State Stanislaus hosts a pair of conference matches this weekend with Cal State East Bay visiting on Friday, followed by Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
