Box Score CHICO — The Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team made key free throws in the final moments of the game as the Warriors held off Chico State to pick up a 69-68 win on the road Monday night.
Two Warriors had double-doubles as Stanislaus started the new year with its first California Collegiate Athletic Association victory. Cal State Stanislaus improved to 4-6 overall and 1-5 during conference play.
It is the Warriors' second win at Chico during the CCAA era, which started in 1998, in 13 tries. They beat Chico State in 2003 en route to the NCAA West Region tournament.
Theresa Henderson scored 23 points with 11 rebounds and
Lauren Godde scored 16 to go with 12 rebounds to lead the Warriors.
Erin Godde scored a career-high 14 points.
Synchro Bull led Chico State (6-4, 3-3 CCAA) with 18 points. Jennifer Rene chipped in 12 points with nine rebounds off the bench.
Cal State Stanislaus got off to a quick start, scoring the game's first 12 points and led by 14 in the first half. The Warriors led by seven points, 65-58, as late as 4:57 left to play in the game but the Wildcats would rally.
Chico State went on an 8-0 run to lead for the first time, 66-65, with 2:15 to go on a Rene jumper. However, Henderson converted on two free throws in the ensuing possession to give the Warriors back the lead.
Henderson was fouled again with 81 seconds left to play and this time the senior converted on one of two free throws to give Stanislaus a two-point lead.
Lauren Godde then added another free throw at 1:04 to help the Warriors with a three-point advantage.
Bull's layup with 49 ticks left was be the game's final field goal. Chico State would go 0-for-2 from the field down the stretch and turn the ball over as time expired after grabbing a rebound on a CSUS missed free throw.
Stanislaus out-shot Chico State, 45.9 percent to 37.8 percent, on the night. The Wildcats were just 2 of 12 from the three-point arch.
Cal State Stanislaus returns home to host a pair of CCAA contests this weekend with undefeated UC San Diego visiting on Friday. Cal State San Bernardino comes to down Saturday night.
