Box Score TURLOCK — In another battle between the rivals of the CCAA North, the heavily penalized Cal State Stanislaus Warriors had to play short-handed but came out with a 2-2 tie against Chico State.
Trying to win on home turf for a chance of the divisional title this weekend, the Warriors were issued eight yellow cards and an ejection Friday night. They were also called on twice as many fouls in the match before settling with 9-3-3 overall and 7-3-3 CCAA records before Sunday's finale against Sonoma State.
Cal State Stanislaus would have needed two wins this week to past the Chico State Wildcats for the North Division, but instead, Chico State (9-2-5, 8-1-5 CCAA) earned the single point it needed to finish first.
Both the Warriors are Wildcats are headed to the CCAA Tournament next weekend in Carson.
Playing a man down after a red card issued to
Jesse Horta at 81:07, the Warriors held strong and tied the game with 26 seconds left to play in regulation.
Nolan Holdridge bent a free kick from about 22 yards out around the wall for the equalizer.
Daniel Kuczynski had given Stanislaus a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute — an advantage held until the 55th minute when Kramer Runager scored for Chico.
Then the match got out of hand — at least according to the official giving out colored-cards on the field. After a single caution issued in the first half, a total of nine cards were handed out (eight yellows and a red) by the time the clock hit 87:00. An additional caution -- which turned into an ejection as the second yellow -- was also given just 10 seconds left to go in the match.
Of the 11 cards handed out, nine were against Cal State Stanislaus.
Chico State finished out the regular season undefeated in its last 12 matches going 8-0-4 to claim the North Division.
The Warriors will wrap-up the regular season on Sunday, during Senior Day, at 2 p.m. when they host Sonoma State.
