Warriors wrap up regular season, head to conference tournament

10/28/2012 4:09:00 PM

Box Score TURLOCK — With the conference tournament picture already painted before the match started, the Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team were unable to successfully finish off the regular season in a 3-2 overtime loss against Sonoma State.

The Warriors, heading to the CCAA Championships for the second straight season, is now 9-4-3 overall and 7-4-3 in the CCAA North. Cal State Stanislaus will face No. 1 seed Cal State L.A. at the conference tournament next Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Carson.

Josue Barajas scored in the 25th minute -- and after Sonoma State answered with a penalty kick score -- Gerardo Cazares put the team back up, 2-1, with a score in the 51st minute.

However, in the 82nd minute, SSU's Andre Perez tied the score again to push the match into overtime. Seven minutes into the extra period, Aaron Glover gave the Seawolves the win on a fastbreak goal.

Like every other CCAA men's soccer match, the contest featured numerous fouls and cautions. The match was played with Stanislaus having an one-man advantage just 13:30 into the match when a red card was given to SSU's Dylan Stafford (for his second yellow in a two-minute span).

The cards flew all afternoon with the Warriors penalized eight times and Seawoves five. In three different occassions, the same player picked up a second yellow thus removed from the contest.

When Sonoma State scored the winner, it was nine-on-eight soccer (aside from the goalkeepers).

Cal State Stanislaus again was also called on nearly twice as many fouls on Sunday (24 to 13). In two matches this week, the Warriors were issed 16 yellow cards and were called on 48 fouls to the opponents' 25.

Stanislaus celebrated senior day without seniors Miguel Torres, Jesse Horta and Schad TenBroeck — all serving suspensions following Friday night's contest, when the Warriors received eight yellows and a red card against Chico State. All three will be eligible to play on Friday against Cal State L.A.

Three other Warriors -- Kyle Cadigan, Luis Guzman and Nolan Holdridge -- also appeared in their final home contest on Sunday.

Despite it all, the depleted Warriors still battled Sonoma State and out-shot the Seawolves 22-16 on Sunday.

The other CCAA tournament match on Friday pits Chico State against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m. at University Stadium in Carson.
