Third time a charm as Warriors beat L.A., 4-1, to advance

Box Score CARSON -- The Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team wasn't going to let Cal State L.A. end its season again as the Warriors man-handled the Golden Eagles, 4-1, Friday at the CCAA Championships.

Luis Guzman, Keith Ramirez, Jesse Horta and Daniel Kuczynski scored goals for the Warriors as they advance to Sunday's conference title match at 3 p.m. against Chico State. Cal State Stanislaus improved to 10-4-3 overall.

In this the team's third appearance at the conference tournament, the Warriors came out on top with its best offensive showing of the year to scored four goals for the first time this season.

Cal State L.A. ended the Warriors' season last year in the semifinal match of the CCAA tournament. The Golden Eagles also did the same in 2006. Stanislaus also avenged a 3-0 defeat earlier this season, on Sept. 9, in Turlock.

Wasting little time, the Warriors got on the board in the 14th minute when Guzman finished off a shot after Ramirez collected a rebound and touch-passed it to Guzman for the 1-0 lead. At 21:44, Ramirez netted a goal himself from 12-yards out to give Stanislaus a 2-0 lead.

"We as a team were not sharp when we played Cal State L.A. earlier this season, but this time our team stayed focused and we stuck to our game plan," explained head coach Dana Taylor."

L.A. answered by Rosario Bras' score in the 25th minute, but the Warriors took a 3-1 lead into the break with about a minute and a half left to play. Horta picked up a Paul Oei shot-rebound and tapped it in for the two-goal advantage.

Oei assisted on the final score of the match as well when his free kick from 25 yards out found Kuczynski for the one-touch goal.

The offensive out-pour came at the right time for the Warriors as they've only scored more than two goals in a match once this season (game two against Colorado-Colorado Springs). It was also historically impressive since the Warriors have not scored four goals on the road since the 1998 opener at Cal State Hayward — a non-conference match during the program's first season in the CCAA.

"They have a very strong offense and possess the Offensive Player of the Year, we focused all week on shutting down their offense," added Taylor.

And lets not forget about the defensive unit Friday night. Cal State L.A. took 19 shots with 10 on frame. But with the help of the backline, Warrior goalkeeper Clint Long kept the Golden Eagles off the net and spectacularly picked up eight saves. He now has 81 saves on the year as he has already turned in one of the best single-season efforts by a Stanislaus goalkeeper with bests in GAA (0.96) and saves percentage (.827).

Late Friday night, Chico State beat host Cal State Dominguez Hills 4-3 in penalty kicks after the teams tied 1-1 after two overtime periods.
