CCAA CHAMPS! Warriors rally to capture conference title

11/4/2012 5:29:00 PM

Box Score CARSON — Jesse Horta's goal helped the Warriors complete their comeback late in the match as Cal State Stanislaus captured its first ever California Collegiate Athletic Association championship by defeating Chico State, 3-2.

Carlos Gavino scored twice and assisted on the game-winner as the Warriors offense put up seven goals in two matches at Toro Stadium to win the CCAA conference championship. It is Cal State Stanislaus's first conference title in men's soccer, second in soccer after the women's team won the league, by also beating a Chico State team (4-0), last November.

After Chico State used two second half goals to take over the match with a 2-1 lead, the resilient Warriors kept attacking.

Octavio Guzman tied the score for the Wildcats at 50:21 with a breakaway goal set-up by Kramer Runager. Then Adam Black hooked up with Guzman in the 63rd minute for a 2-1 Chico lead.

A handball called in the box gave Stanislaus a penalty kick opportunity, which Gavino promptly converted to his right under a diving Chico keeper Sam Evans, to even the score in the 78th minute. Gavino had given the Warriors a 1-0 first half lead at 12:34 with a free-kick blast from 25 yards out that deflected off a defender for the score.

With set-pieces the team's main offensive ammo this season, the Warriors were given that chance again. At 87:22, Gavino sent a free kick into the mix with Horta heading in the winner.

Clint Long picked up six saves behind a solid defense Sunday. Gavino was named the tournament's most valuable player. Long, Paul Oei, Keith Ramirez and Horta were also named to the All-tournament team.

The Warriors also did it all with tremendous team effort on both sides of the field. The scores came from six different players in the two tournament matches. In all eight different Warriors figured in the scoring. Without a super star, Cal State Stanislaus received only three honorable mentions earlier in the week when the All-CCAA team was named.

Cal State Stanislaus (11-4-3), which was making its third appearance in the tournament, earned its first postseason win on Friday with an impressive 4-1 win over No. 1 seeded Cal State L.A. Sunday evening, the Warriors knocked off a Widlcats (9-3-6) team that was seeded No. 2 and won the CCAA North.

Since winning the conference is not an automatic qualifier in men's soccer, the Warriors hope this is exactly the formula that will help them get into the NCAA Championship tournament. Cal State Stanislaus had entered the week ranked No. 8 in the West. The Warriors just knocked off No. 5 Chico State and No. 6 Cal State L.A. Only the top six teams are invited to the NCAA postseason tournament. The field will be announced Monday afternoon.
