TURLOCK — The Warriors wasted little time on Sunday getting on the scorboard en route to a 2-0 win over Cal State Monterey Bay at Warrior Stadium.

Jose Ramirez scored 62 seconds into the match and a second half penalty kick goal by Carlos Gavino was enough to give Cal State Stanislaus the victory as the Warriors improved to 4-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

"The game plan was spot-on, we really wanted to move the ball and play quickly, especially on our pitch," head coach Dana Taylor said. "Our game plan was to take advantage (of our field) and move the ball quickly. The guys did that well which was evident with our first score."

The early goal was much needed for an offense that has the ability to score but has been coming up short lately. Entering the match the Warriors have not found the back of the net in 212-plus minutes of play.

The draught ended quickly on a nicely executed play on passes from Jesse Horta and Josue Barajas that led to the Ramirez score.

Cal State Stanislaus rode the 1-0 score the rest of the first half and defended before taking a 6-1 shot-advantage at the break.

Both offenses came alive in the second half, each taking 11 shots, but it was the Warriors who capitalize on a golden opportunity. Kyle Cadigan was tackled hard in the box by the far post, which led to the Gavino PK goal to give Stanislaus the 2-0 lead.

The Warriors had another great opportunity in the 81st minute when a red card was issued to CSUMB's Gabe Glass, who pulled down Paul Oei trying for a runaway score just two feet out side of the top of the box to set up a direct kick.

In the end, the Warriors out-shot Monterey Bay, 17-12, to extend their home win-streak against the Otters to three.

"I just wanted to put the game away and allow the defense to relax a little and hold on for the win," Gavino said regarding the penalty kick attempt.

Goalkeeper Clint Long picked up his second consecutive shutout this wekend with four more saves, including a couple of highlight-reel stabs.

A CSUS foul was called just five-foot in front of the goal in the 89th minute, but Long stepped-up to knock away a point-blank chance by Otter's Pieter Reed to preserve the shutout.

"It was a tough call there and we wanted to keep the shutout after Friday's first shutout," Long said. "We wanted a second this weekend to keep the team's energy high."

The Warriors will be off next Friday (originally scheduled to play Humboldt State) before taking on Sonoma State at Rohnert Park on Sunday.
