Box Score TURLOCK — Chico State scored three unanswer goals as the visiting Wildcats defeated Cal State Stanislaus in men's soccer, 3-1, on Sunday at Warrior Stadium.
Carlos Gavino scored for the Warriors in the 23rd minute but defending conference champion Stanislaus opens 0-2 in conference play for the first time since 2008, the year before the start of the head coach
Dana Taylor era.
No. 18 Chico State even the score immediately and added two more goals in the second half to improve to 4-0-0, 2-0-0 CCAA.
Gavino's score came at 22:12 after his penalty kick try was amazingly saved by James Stroud. But Gavino collected the rebound and deposited back into the net to give the Warriors an early 1-0 lead.
But, the Wildcats answered right away with a goal by Jordan Gorman less than eight minutes later. Chico State would add two more scores in the second half — at the 52nd and 63rd minute marks.
The low-scoring offense of Cal State Stanislaus has been held to three goals in four matches this season — all three goals came from set plays (throw in, corner kick and penalty kick rebound).
The Warriors fought hard in a physical match that saw 29 total fouls called and four cautions issued.
Stanislaus goalkeeper
Clint Long earned four saves in defeat after facing 14 Wildcat shots (7 on goal).
The 0-2 start was also an oddity since the Warriors were 28-8-4 entering Sunday when playing at Warrior Stadium.
