SAN DIEGO — Blair Ehrlich spanked 21 kills as the freshman led Cal State Stanislaus to its first victory of the season in a four-set win over Texas A&M International at the Seaside Invitational.
Ehrlich's 21-kill single match performance was the best by a freshman since Sarah Barnett did it with 24 kills on Nov. 6, 1999. Ehrlich also had 16 kills earlier on the day in a 3-0 loss to Azusa Pacific at the tournament hosted by Point Loma Nazarene.
The freshman outside hitter tallied 37 kills on the day to finish with 52 for the tournament to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team.
In the 11-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-20 win over Texas A&M International (0-3), the Warriors (1-3) collectively picked up 102 digs and 19 blocks defensively. Libero Sarah Crowl had 26 digs with four other Warriors with 11 or more each. Setter Hannah Green picked up 19 digs to go with her 40 assists. Ehrlich earned 17 digs as well.
On the blocking front, Taylor Massengale was huge with seven personal blocks (three solos). Jordan Harris and Paige Walker each contributed to four blocks. Walker also had 12 kills and Massengale seven.
In the day's first match against Azusa Pacific (2-1), Stanislaus fell in straight sets, 25-18, 25-20, 25-13. Christianna Knutson had seven kills to go with Ehrlich's 16, but a balanced attack from APU was too much for the Warriors to handle.
Cal State Stanislaus travels again next week for the annual trip to Rohnert Park in play in the Seawolf Spike. The Warriors will see Montana State Billings again (they faced each other Friday), Western Washington, Hawaii Pacific and Dominican.
