Southern trip not-so-pleasant for Warrior women this time

1/25/2014 8:22:00 PM

Box Score POMONA — The last time the Warriors went South for conference games, they came away with a few firsts and triumphs. This time: not so much.

A 19-2 Pomona run late in the first half separated the teams as Cal Poly Pomona pulled ahead to beat Cal State Stanislaus, 83-64, Saturday night inside Kellogg Gym.

Briana Cotton led the team with 18 points but the Warriors dropped another road loss this week and fell to 10-6 overall and 7-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Jasmine Washington added 14 points and Ana Burch scored nine points with seven rebounds.

Cal Poly Pomona improved to 13-3, 10-2 in the CCAA to stay in first place. Ariel Marsh had 23 points and Ashley Lovett had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Jada Blackwell also had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The 19-2 run turned a 21-20 Stanislaus lead into a 39-23 Pomona advantage in a five-minute stretch in the first half. The Broncos led at halftime 41-27.

The Warriors got within nine points early in the second half, but another Pomona spurt — this time a 15-0 run — made it 59-35.

During the Warriors' last road trip three weeks ago to Southern California, they completed a rare CCAA road trip with a pair of wins. The Warriors snapped a 20-game losing streak to UC San Diego and picked up their first victory at San Bernardino's Coussoulis Arena since 2004.

Fortunately for the Warriors they will be home for their next four conference games, starting Friday against San Francisco State.
