SF State holds off Warriors to take season series

1/31/2014 7:49:00 PM

Box Score TURLOCK — Briana Cotton had an open look that would have brought the house down. But her shot rims off with seconds left to play as the Warriors lost a heartbreaker, 82-80, Friday night.

San Francisco State got another 24 points from Katie Batlin as the Gators handed Cal State Stanislaus its third straight defeat. The Warriors fell deeper in the CCAA standings, now at 7-6 in conference play and 10-7 overall.

Jasmine Washington, who led the Warriors with a career high 24 points, gave Stanislaus a chance with 25 seconds left when she nailed the team's second straight three-pointer to make it 81-80 in favor of the Gators. Ana Burch had drained a trey just 13 seconds earlier to pull the team within two at 79-77.

Burch finished with 16 points, six assists, three steals and two blocked shots for a well-played all-around game. Lauren Godde scored 12 points with 15 rebounds for another double-double. But the rest of the team scored 28 points.

Batlin, a transfer from Saint Mary's, scored 16 of her points in the second half on the night and finished 9-for-19. She was also 6-for-10 from the line and pulled 10 rebounds for SF State. When the teams met in San Francisco on Dec. 7, Batlin torched the Warriors with 27 points.

Van Sickel, who had 24 in December against the Warriors, had 16 this time around for San Francisco State (11-8, 7-6 CCAA).

While the Gators lead for most of the game, no one led by more than six points at any given time. Stanislaus had a five-point lead late in the first half, but a 10-0 SFSU run erased that advantage for a 32-27 halftme score.

Stanislaus, which has now dropped five of its last seven games, has found itself in seventh place and out of the CCAA postseason picure for the time being. The Warriors will have to rebound on Saturday against Sonoma State, which has lost nine straight. The Seawolves (2-15, 1-12) lost at Chico State, 79-45, Friday.
