Warriors look to tame Coyotes, Wildcats this week

The Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team returns to Southern California on Friday in a CCAA match against Cal State San Bernardino to start a rare away-and-home weekend. On Sunday, the Warriors host rival Chico State at Warrior Stadium.

Series Notes: The Warriors had won three straight against Cal State San Bernardino (2010-2012) until last year's 1-0 loss early in the season. Stanislaus leads the head-to-head series 9-6-1 but is 2-4-1 in San Bernardino … Chico State is 3-0-2 against the Warriors in the last three seasons after the Warriors upset the 13th ranked Wildcats, 1-0, to close out the 2010 season (Oct. 30), in one of the program's signature victories. Chico State has dominated in the all-time series with a 21-6-1 record. Four of those Stanislaus wins happened here in Turlock.

Last Time Against the Opponents: Cal State San Bernardino won the 2013 conference opener on Sept. 13 at Warrior Stadium in a 1-0 match. Clint Long had five saves for the Warriors but Roberto Mariscal scored 40 seconds into the second half to account for the only goal of the match … Against the 18th ranked Wildcats on Sept. 15, 2013, the Warriors lost 3-1 on three unanswered Chico goals. Carlos Gavino gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.

In the Ranks: None of the three teams are ranked in the NSCAA Top 25 or the regional top 10 this week. Chico State was ranked as high as No. 5 on Sept. 16 when the Cats were 3-0-1 … Among the ranked teams in the CCAA are Cal Poly Pomona at No. 8 and Cal State L.A. at No. 20.

Got a Point Out of a Tough Trip: The Stanislaus men picked up a point in the standings during the recent tough road trip to La Jolla and Pomona. The Warriors tied UC San Diego 1-1 on Friday before the 2-1 loss at highly regarded Cal Poly Pomona. The Warriors are now in sixth place in the CCAA standings with eight points, just four points behind fourth place Humboldt State and Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Tough to Score on the Broncos: Against one of the toughest teams to score on on Sunday, the Warriors got through with a goal at No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona. Jose Ramirez scored in the 79th minute to break-up the shutout against the Broncos, who had eight shutouts and allowed just three goals on the season. Cal Poly Pomona leads the CCAA with a tiny 0.30 team goals against average.

Among the top CCAA Goalkeepers: Clint Long is the sixth best goalkeeper in the conference with his 0.95 goals against average. He's 10th with 24 saves and a .727 saves percentage. Long is also tied for fourth with four shutouts. Russ Klabough has a 0.62 GAA with a .905 saves percentage (but has not played enough to qualify ion the leaderboard).

Rapid Firing: The Warriors lead the CCAA in shots with 208 and averages 17.3 shots per game. The team has out-shot opponents in 10 of the 12 matches this season … Stanislaus is out-shooting teams 208 to 141 (84-54 on goal) … Manny Villegas is third in the conference with 32 shots.

About Cal State San Bernardino (6-4-0, 2-4-0 CCAA): After dropping their first four CCAA contests, the Coyotes won two straight last week on the road at Sonoma State (4-3) and Humboldt State (2-0). Those four losses were against teams now in the top five in the CCAA standings … Corey Christ and Juan Carlos Gonzalez have five goals each to lead the team … Ivan Sanchez is 4-2-0 with a 1.48 GAA in six matches. Roberto Gonzalez is 2-2 with a 2.25 GAA in four contests in goal.

About Chico State (6-5-1, 1-5-0 CCAA): The Wildcats won at Humboldt State, 2-1, in overtime last Friday to snap a four-match losing streak. They are coming off a 3-1 loss at Sonoma State on Sunday … Goalkeeper Luke Dennison is fifth in the conference with a 0.89 GAA. He has played in all 12 matches for the Wildcats … The team's leading scorer is Matt Hurlow (4 goals, 1 assist with two game-winning goals).
