Box Score TURLOCK - Unable to put away the visiting Toros, the Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team dropped a five-set thriller to Cal State Dominguez Hills after winning the first two sets.
The momentum shifted during the 10-minute intermission as Cal State Dominguez Hills won three straight sets to earn its first California collegiate Athletic Association victory Saturday night, 23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 27-25, 15-12. The Toros are now 2-11 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
As for the Warriors, they were unable to capitalize on the night where unforced errors by both teams accounted for a bunch of the scoring.
Paige Walker was the highlight for Stanislaus (1-12, 1-8 CCAA) with a career-high 17 kills with just one error (and that came in the fifth) on 35 attempts for a great .457 hitting percentage, which was nearly a career best. Earlier this season, against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 19, Walker hit .464.
Jocelyn Cervantes chipped in 10 kills and
Blair Ehrlich added eight but had nine errors. Setters
Hannah Green and
Rachel Parsons had 22 and 20 assists, respectively. Green also led the team with 17 digs and Parsons had 12.
On another bright note, the Warriors recorded 12 aces - which meant 12 receiving errors for CSUDH as part of the error-filled match.
Morgan Miller had five of the team's service aces. The Toros also had 16 service errors and seven blocking errors to account for 35 Stanislaus points.
However, Dominguez Hills came out of the break on fire, putting away 29.4 percent of its attacks in the third set, led by Jilianne Pineda who had four of her 10 during that set. Claire Autry led the Toros with 14 kills on the night.
The Warriors nearly pulled off a great comeback to win the contest in the fourth. Stanislaus held off seven CSUDH set-points starting at 24-17 to tie the score at 24-24 that included two Walker service aces. Teams traded points to get to 25-25, but the Toros picked up two points on an attacking error and a Hannah Warner kill to force the decisive fifth set.
Walker had four of her kills in the fifth, when she finally hit one wide of the line for her first error. Prior to that, she was 14-0-26.
In the end, CSUDH played better defense, with 14 digs in the final set to edge the Warriors.
