WARRIORS ADVANCE! Stanislaus edges UCSD in PK shootout

11/2/2014 4:55:00 PM

Box Score LA JOLLA - This is why the Warriors practice penalty kick shootouts every day at the end of training sessions.

The Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team was nearly perfect as they edged No. 3 seeded UC San Diego, 5-4, in the shootout tiebreaker on Sunday to advance in the CCAA Soccer Championship tournament. The Warriors will return home to try and win their second title in three years at Warrior Stadium next week when the conference tournament shifts to Turlock.

The Warriors made their first four PK tries to put the pressure on the Tritons and senior goalkeeper Clint Long saved two UCSD attempts to lead the team.

"I am really proud of the guys, coming back and traveling all the way down here on short notice. They did a great job and brought a lot of energy" head coach Dana Taylor said. "Overall, they played exceptionally well and we're looking forward to coming home and battle (in the next round)."

Cal State Stanislaus (6-8-4), the sixth seeded team in the six-team conference tournament, will face No. 2 Cal State L.A. (13-3), Friday at 7 p.m. on home pitch in the first men's semifinal match. Top seed Cal Poly Pomona will take on No. 4 Cal State Dominguez Hills, which beat Cal State San Bernardino, 2-0 Sunday, in the 4:30 p.m. semifinal contest.

The faster Warriors men's team ran up-and-down the field at Triton Soccer Stadium and out-shot UC San Diego 15-9 in the match but either team was able to find the back of the net. Stanislaus managed to get a couple of good looks at the goal late in regulation but to no avail.

The teams remained dead-locked in two 10-minute overtime periods, forcing the match to be decided via the penalty kick shootout.

Carlos Gavino made the first Warrior try and Long immediately saved UCSD's first attempt from Brandon Bauman to put the pressure on the Tritons.

Stanislaus would make three straight PK shots - by Gerardo Cazares, Brady Taylor and Matthew Waldron - and took a 4-3 lead. Jose Acosta's shot was then knocked away by UCSD goalie Cameron McElfresh to allow Matthew McClure to tie the score at 4-4 after five rounds.

Rafael Chavez, another freshman, then converted on his kick to set-up the heroic play by Long, whose diving save prevented A.J. Beloff from scoring to send the Warriors home to the next round in the tournament.

The Warriors won the 2012 CCAA Championship in Carson as the fourth seed in the four-team tournament. Their semifinal opponent then was also Cal State L.A.

Winners of Friday's semifinal matches will play for the 2014 conference title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Championship tournament.

"We have to play and game plan for one game at a time, but we are playing extremely well right now," added Taylor.
