Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Four players in double digits as Warriors open season with win

FRESNO — With four players in double-digits in scoring, the Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team opened the 2014-15 reglar season with an impresive 19-point win on the road over Fresno Pacific.

Led by a pair of 11s by Jasmine Washington and Alysa Valentine, the Warriors beat the Sunbirds, 67-48, in the first game that counts in the win-loss records. The Warriors had played back-to-back exhibition contests against Division I teams last Friday (Pacific) and Wednesday (Fresno State).

"This was a positive step forward for our team. It was great to have many different Warriors step up and contribute to our first win," head coach Wayman Strickland said.

Valentine hit three of four three-point attempts to lead the Warriors offensively while Washington made five of nine shots to also end up with 11 points. Ana Burch and Riley Holladay each added 10 points for Cal State Stanislaus, which will open the home schedule Saturday afternoon against Academy of Art.

Aleseana Whitney also had seven points and six rebounds in her Stanislaus "debut" where the stats count. Camille Roberts chipped in eight point as well. The team-effort also included six rebounds from Erika Larsen and five points from Briana Cotton.

Fresno Pacific (0-3) shot just 29.1 percent for the game and was out-rebounded by the Warriors 49-43. The Warriors also forced 23 FPU turnovers. Charde Stevens had 13 to lead the Sunbirds.

"This is just a glimpse of what we've capable of when we are locked in and focused. We still have lots of room to improve on many aspects of the game," Strickland added.

Saturday's home game at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena against the Art U Urban Knights is at 5:30 p.m.
