RIVERSIDE — In the season's first big test against a ranked team, the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team came up short versus No. 17 ranked Dixie State as the Warriors fell, 76-54, in the first game of the CBU Thanksgiving Classic.
Five Red Storms scored in double digits as Dixie State shot nearly 51 percent from the field to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Warriors were led by
Chris Read with 12 points but Stanislaus fell to 2-1.
The Warriors will face another ranked team on Saturday when they take on host and No. 11 ranked California Baptist in Riverside.
In Friday's match-up against Dixie State, the Warriors had a lead in the first half when
Kyle Gouveia gave his team a 20-15 lead with a layup, but that was the turning point. Dixie State went on a 17-0 run to take over the game.
Stanislaus did respond a little but never got closer than the halfitme score of six points because Read closed out the half with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 36-30.
The Warriors shot just 24.2 percent in the second half (8-for-33) while Dixie State built on its lead, as large as 25 points.
Gouveia finished with seven points and seven rebounds and
Wes Bartole added nine points and eight rebounds to pace teh Warriors.
