RIVERSIDE — For the second straight night at the CBU Thanksgiving Classic, the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team lost to a highly ranked team as the Warriors dropped a 80-53 decisive decision to host California Baptist Saturday night.
A 9-1 California Baptist run to start the second half turned a 42-31 halftime Lancers lead into a 20-point advantage for the No. 11 ranked team in the country as CBU improved to 5-1 on the season. For the Warriors, they will take a 2-2 mark into next week's California Collegiate Athletic Association opener back on the road to Los Angeles.
Rob Walters was the top Warrior on the night with 15 points and nine rebounds as the senior forward shot 7 of 12 for the field. The rest of the Warriors were just 11 for 44 for 25 percent shooting. Stanislaus finished well under 40 percent shooting again as the Warriors ended up 32.1 percent shooting collectively.
Chris Read chipped in 11 points and
Wes Bartole had nine as the trio of seniors accounted for 35 of team's 53 points.
Five Lancers were in double-digits in scoring with Gelaun Wheelwright leading with 15 points. Wheelwright made four of the team's 12 three-pointers. Three other CBU players each added 12 points.
That 20-point lead quickly turned into a 31-point game, at 68-37, after another 16-5 run by Cal Baptist.
Friday night, the Warriors lost to No. 17 Dixie State.
Cal State Stanislaus, the 2014-15 CCAA conference tournament champion, begins its defense of the title this week when teh Warriors travel to take on Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
