Read leads Warriors to CCAA road victory at L.A.

LOS ANGELES — Chris Read's all-around solid game helped the Warriors to a victory as the Warriors open the 2014-15 California Collegiate Athletic Association season with a nice 64-55 win over Cal State L.A. Friday night.

Despite the low-scoring out-put, the Warriors enjoyed their best shooting night of the young season to open defense of their conference title by starting the year 1-0 (3-2 overall). Cal State Stanislaus will try and make it a 2-0 CCAA start Saturday night when the Warriors take on Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.

Read led all players with 13 points as the team shot 50 percent (21-for-42) from the field. Before The Warriors did not shoot better than 35 percent in any of the season's first four games. Read, who was 5-for-8 shooting himself, also posted four assists, blocked two shots and made four steals for a well-rounded game.

Rob Walters added 10 points, Tyler Barber, who also had fiver rebounds, scored nine and Alek Carlson chipped in eight to pace the Warriors. Raphael Carter-Nowling led all players with six rebounds. The team, made 12 of 18 shots in the second half to pull away.

Cal State L.A. (2-2, 1-1 CCAA) got 12 points each from Dustin Watts and Justin Snavely.

The Warriors came out of the halftime break on fire with a 10-2 run capped by a Barber three-pointer to turn a 24-23 halftime lead into a 35-25 advantage. The offense didn't stall there, or in the second half at all, as a Clinton Tremelling trey at 10:11 left extended the lead to 18 points at 47-29. Walters' jumper at 6:29 left to go gave Stanislaus its biggest lead on the night, at 54-35.

The game wasn't as close as the final score indicated since the Golden Eagles scored the game's final seven points but the game was already out of their reach.

The Toros, Stanislaus' opponent Saturday night, lost to Chico State 69-59 Friday.
