Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

L.A. hands Warriors CCAA opener loss in overtime

LOS ANGELES — The Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team was held well below its scoring average as host Cal State L.A. forced overtime and won in the extra period, 66-64, to start CCAA play for both teams Friday night.

A Kiara Harewood free throw with 23 seconds left tied the game for Cal State L.A. as the Golden Eagles outscored the Warriors 9-7 in overtime to improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association.

The Warriors lost in overtime for just the second time in the last 11 tries dating back to the 2006-07 season and fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA.

Camille Roberts led the Warriors with 11 points, but like the entire Stanislaus team, struggled offensively. Roberts was 4-for-12 from the floor (3-for-10 from three-pointers) as the team shot just 29.1 percent for the game collectively. The 64-point total is also well below season average of 78.3 as the Warriors are coming back two straight 80-plus point games.

On the bright side, Stanislaus forced another opponent to make mistakes to create more shooting opportunities. Similar to the three previous games, the Warriors forced L.A. into making 35 turnovers to create a plus-16 advantage on shot attempts. Stanislaus took 79 shots (24 beyond the 3-point arch) versus Cal State L.A.'s 63.

Stanislaus has now forced 116 turnovers in four games — a 29 per game average.

Cassidy Sanders-Curry, whose layup with 1:23 left to play in regulation gave the Warriors a 57-54, lead, finished with eight points. Briana Cotton added seven points and Aleseana Whitney led with seven rebounds.

However, L.A. out-rebounded the Warriors slightly, 58-52, led by Kiara Harewood with 15 rebounds. Franeka Hall had 19 points and a pair of Golden Eagles each added 13 points.

Cal State Stanislaus faces Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night in Carson. The Toros (4-3, 1-0 CCAA) beat Chico State, 62-42, Friday.
