Warriors win eventful game over Screaming Eagles

Box Score TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team remains perfect under the lights at home as the Warriors defeated Southern Indiana, 8-5, in an entertaining and eventful game at Warrior Baseball Field Saturday night.

Brent Hall went 2-for-4 with two doubles and Skippy Ferreria sprayed three singles as the Warriors take the second game of the three-game set over the visiting Screaming Eagles to improve to 4-2 on the season. Eriksen Dickens and Stevie Robinson each also went 2-for-4 to help the cause offensively.

Dustin Baisdon threw 5 1/3 innings of strong relief to pick up the win. He gave up two runs — one earned — on two hits after coming in for Donnie Fairchilds with two outs in the first.

Stanislaus has won all four games this week played under the light here at home. Sunday's series finale is planned for a Noon start as head coach Kenny Leonesio is scheduled to send Oakdale standout freshman pitcher Nick Ippolito to the mound for the second time this week. Ippolito made his collegiate debut on Monday Night during Stanislaus' inaugural night game.

On a crisp cool evening on Saturday, however, things didn't start out too well for the Warriors. Fairchilds was lifted after facing six batters — but the defense didn't help him. A miscue in left and a passed ball resulted in a USI run. After walking his second batter to load the bases, Fairchilds was replaced by Baisdon, who got Matt Bowles to fouled out to third to end the inning.

The Warriors got a run back in the first on one of Hall's RBI doubles that scored Dayton Mellor. The teams then traded runs in the second and third to make it 2-2 until the Eagles go ahead with a run in the fourth resulted from a fielding error by CSUS.

Then, the Warriors went to work in the fourth.

Stanislaus sent 10 batters to the plate in the six-run fourth that included four straight hits, including two bunt singles, to start the frame. Mix in a couple of wild pitches, two walks and two sacrifice flies, the Warriors led 8-3 by the time the inning was completed.

The Warriors also chased USI's best thrower in Jonathon Wandling who lasted three innings and gave up seven runs on 11 hits. USI's reliever Brandon Shaw pitched effectively the rest of the way. He gave up just one run on one hit — Hall's second double in the middle of that fourth-inning rally. Shaw retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced.

USI scored twice in the ninth to make it closer on a three singles, but Martin Gomez was able to finish what he started in the inning to preserve the win for Stanislaus.
