Southern Indiana takes series finale against Warriors

2/16/2014 3:16:00 PM

Box Score TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team couldn't get much offense going as the Warriors dropped the series finale to Southern Indiana on Sunday.

Matt Bowles kept the Warriors' offense quiet and the Screaming Eagles scattered 14 hits as Southern Indiana took the final game, 8-1. Bowles, who showed off his defensive skills as the third baseman the past two nights, took the mound and threw effectively. He gave up just a solo homerun and six hits in seven innings while striking out three Warriors.

Colton Beatty's solo home run to deep right field over the tall fence in the sixth inning was Stanislaus' only run on the day.

Cal State Stanislaus (4-3) had its best chance at some runs in the fourth, with the score only 1-0 in favor of USI. Beatty led off the inning with a single before being erased on a fielder's choice with one out as the second out. Still, Marcus Mastrobuoni again tried to start a rally. He singled to move Brent Hall to third to put Warriors at the corners. However, Bowles got Colt McLaughlin to groundout to end the inning.

After that the Warriors never had more than one baserunner on base as they came up empty after a two-out double by Stevie Robinson in the fifth. In the sixth, Dayton Mellor reached on an error and got as far as third before being stranded. In the seventh, Eriksen Dickens led off with a double, but Bowles took cared of the next three Warriors in order to leave Dickens at third.

For the game, the Warriors were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Beatty and Mastrobuoni each finished with two hits.

Freshman Nick Ippolito, who was making his second start this week, gave up four runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. He did strikeout seven and walked three before picking up the loss. The Warriors used five pitchers, including Ryan McDaniel in the sixth. McDaniel has now appeared in three out of the five games this week. On Sunday, he pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings with two strikeouts.

Southern Indiana (1-2) was again led by leadoff hitter Kyle Kempf, who went 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs. Trent Gunn also had three hits as eight of the nine Eagles in the lineup had at least a hit.

California Collegiate Athletic Association games begin for Cal State Stanislaus next weekend when the Warriors host San Francisco State. The first game of the series, here in Turlock, is on Friday at 2 p.m. SF State, 3-5, hosts Central Washington in a doubleheader on Monday.
