The big picture of the night was the team setting a milestone for the Stanislaus 38-year program with its 500th win. The more immediate result — and the one that perhaps matters more to head coach
Wayman Strickland — was the second straight win with a weekend sweep.
Saturday's win over UC San Diego marked the first time the Warriors has beaten the Tritons twice in the same year since 2002-03. This followed Friday night's accomplishment of beating Cal State San Bernardino twice in a year for the first time since 2003-04.
In the CCAA standings, everyone the Warriors were contenting with lost on Saturday, meaning the Warriors take possession of fifth place. Stanislaus is tied with Cal State East Bay, which lost in overtime to Cal Poly Pomona, for fifth. The top six teams at the end of the regular season advance to the conference tournament in Ontario March 6-8.
UC San Diego (11-9, 8-8 CCAA) went 12 minutes and 24 seconds without a field goal in the second half — from 13:18 to 1:51 — until Megan Perry made back-to-back three-pointers. Those three pointers ended a 0-for-20 draught behind the arc by the Tritons.
In the middle of the UCSD dry-spell the Warriors used a 14-0 run to build a 13-point, 58-45 lead after a pair of Washington free throws at 2:19 left.
The pair of Perry triples cut the Stanislaus lead to down to eight and the Tritons got as close as four points in the final seconds after a Erin Dautremont jumper.
Riley Holladay made a couple of free throws with 30 seconds left for the final count.
UC San Diego was led by McKennan Bertsch with 16 points. Miranda Seto had 15 points and nine rebounds.
Cal State Stanislaus will have to become road Warriors for the next two weeks before finishing the regular season at home against Cal Poly Pomona and Humboldt State, Feb. 28-March 1.
