Walters lift Warriors over Coyotes in entertaining game

TURLOCK — Rob Walters came up big in the Warriors' first home game in nearly a month as Cal State Stanislaus won an entertaining basketball game over Cal State San Bernardino, 64-60, Friday night.

Walters notched his first double-double of the season with a career high 20 points and a season high 14 rebounds to lead the Stanislaus charge. With Sonoma State losing at UC San Diego, the Warriors now move into a first place tie with the Seawolves and Cal Poly Pomona at 5-2 in the conference standings. The Warriors are 8-4 overall.

After CSU San Bernardino's Jacob Thomas hit a three-pointer to give the Coyotes (4-6, 4-3 CCAA) a 57-55 lead with 4:54 to go, they failed to make a field goal for the next three-and-a-half minutes.

Meanwhile the Warriors went on a 8-0 run, including two consecutive jumpers by Walters, for a six-point, 63-57 Stanislaus lead. Thomas finally ended the CSUSB draught with another three-pointer at 1:43 to make it a 63-60 game.

Walters scored 14 points and 12 rebounds in the second half to take charge while the team continued to shoot well. For the game, the Warriors finished 54.3 percent from the floor after a hot 59.1 percent first half. The senior forward would end up with a 8-for-10 shooting night with four assists and three steals.

"My teammates they depend on me for hustle, When they tell me to turn it up, I turn it up and that's when I go out and get it," said Walters about his surge in the second half.

On the other side of the ball, San Bernardino went cold in the first half against the Warriors defense. The Coyotes, which shot 60.9 percent in the first half, was just 8 of 28 in the second half (28.6 percent).

The closely contested game (there were 10 tied scores) had its dramatics with key three-pointers, break-away layups and a number of dazzling slam dunks. Christian Bayne and Chris Read even tossed in an alley-oop play that had the Friday night crowd on its feet. That play, at 8:22 in the second half, gave the Warriors a six-point 51-45 lead before Thomas warmed up.

Thomas, who entered with a 22.3 points per game average since his Dec. 18 debut, scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half. Taylor Statham kept the Coyotes in the game with 14 points, including four three-pointers. Statham also had six rebounds.

For Walters, his 20-point night was much needed offensively as the Warriors are playing without Tyler Barber who is out with a calf injury. Shey Mataele never really got going being in foul trouble and Read finished with 14 points. Wes Bartole also chipped in 10 points.

The surging Humboldt State Lumberjacks come to town on Saturday with a six-game winning streak. HSU edged Chico State, 74-73, in overtime Friday night.
