TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team ran into a team that is hitting on all cyclinders as Humboldt State defeated the Warriors, 85-71, Saturday night.
Humboldt State extended its winning streak to 11 games to improve to 12-1 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Lumberjacks have won nine games this season by double-digit margins and Saturday night was no different.
The Warriors started off strong, hitting their first four shots with major game intensity. An early 5-point lead, however, was quickly erased when HSU went on a 16-0 run to make it a 26-15 game and the 'Jacks never looked back.
Cal State Stanislaus, 3-9, 1-7 CCAA, was led by
Cassidy Sanders-Curry with 18 points and
Briana Cotton followed her 21-point performance from Friday night with 17 more points.
Riley Holladay chipped in 14 points with four steals and two assists. Freshman
Reana Hardin had nine points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
Humboldt State also extended its winning streak over the Warriors to eight games with its accurate shooting, especially from behind the arch. HSU made 12 three-pointers on 29 tries for a solid 41.4 percentage. Danielle Gaumer netted five of those treys and finisehd with a team-best 17 points. Three other players also had double-digit in points. HSU leader A'Jaee Foster scored 13 points and eight rebounds. She also had six assists, two blocks and two steals.
The Lumberjacks got their lead into the 20s late in the first half when Nyaa Davis's layup at 1:27 to cap a 15-4 HSU run to make it 43-23.
The Warriors made it a closer game in the second half. After trailing by as many as 30 points, a little 8-2 Stanislaus run made it a 14-point game after a Holladay three-pointer with 1:08 to go.
