HAYWARD — The Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team show why its one of the best teams in the CCAA as the Warriors rebounded from a tough night to win impressively, on the road, with a 77-67 victory at Cal State East Bay Saturday night.
A solid second half with strong shooting and defense keyed the Warriors' night as they improved to 12-5 overall and 9-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The win also kept Stanislaus in the three-way tie for first in the standings at the halfway point in the CCAA schedule. Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona, both winners Saturday, are also 9-3 in league play.
Against Cal State East Bay,
Shey Mataele had his best game since returning to the lineup with 13 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds and had six assists.
Wes Bartole also scored 13 points while pulled nine rebounds.
Rob Walters, who also had nine boards, scored 11 and
Chris Read chipped in 10 points. Read also had four steals and a block-shot to help the cause defensively.
Saturday night's game was a huge contrast of the game from Friday, when the Warriors couldn't get much offense going at Cal State Monterey Bay. Against the CSUEB Pioneers, the Warriors scored the first 10 points of the game and retained control and the led throughout the game.
The Warriors held a 34-30 lead at intermission, then used a 12-2 run that started a 14:29 for a 17-point, 55-38 advantage.
Richie Medina's three-pointer at 10:02 capped off that run for the Warriors' largest lead on the night.
Cal State East Bay (4-14, 2-10 CCAA) did try to come back and got as close as 10 points but the Warriors held off the Pioneers defensively while pushing the lead back up to 17 as late as the 2:58 mark with a
Kyle Gouveia dunk as the exclamation mark.
In the end, the Warriors shot a sparkling 51.7 percent on the night after a 16-for-25 second half. They also drastically improved on the free throws, hitting 12 of 15 for 80 percent.
