Bayne leads Warriors to another win against UC San Diego

LA JOLLA — His name is Christian Bayne.

The freshman from Bakersfield had a coming-out party as Bayne led the Warriors to another CCAA road victory Friday night as they defeated UC San Diego, 53-48.

Bayne scored nine of his team-best 14 points in the second half, including a pair of free throws in the final seconds, to help Cal State Stanislaus improve to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Wes Bartole notched his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Stanislaus victory helps the Warriors stay in a three-way tie for first place as the year of 2015 begins. The Warriors are now 4-0 in conference games away from Fitzpatrick Arena this season.

The win also means Cal State Stanislaus continues its winning ways against UC San Diego, having defeated the Tritions eight out of the last nine meetings. The Warriors have now also won five straight at UCSD's RIMAC Arena.

It was Bayne who gave the Warriors their final lead for good with a three-pointer at 6:01 left to play for a 40-37 Stanislaus lead. Bayne would nail another trey with 3:00 to go to make it 44-40.

As UC San Diego (4-5, 2-3 CCAA) tries to make a comeback, Alek Carlson hit a three-pointer to keep the Warriors ahead at 49-45 and a minute left to play. Rob Walters and Bayne each converted on two free throws in the final 12 seconds to seal the win.

Bayne, whose previous season-high was eight points, also had four assists, two steals and five rebounds.

Chris Read scored 11 points and Walters finished with eight points. UC San Diego was led by Hunter Walker with 21 points.

Cal State Stanislaus, which remains tied with Chico State and Sonoma State each at 4-1 CCAA atop of the standings, will travel to take on Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night. The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos lost to Chico State, 51-50, Friday.
