TURLOCK — Playing with a lot of composure and showing a lot character, the Stanislaus State women's soccer team overcame many turns of events to come away with a 2-2 draw against Cal Poly Pomona Sunday late afternoon at Warrior Stadium.
The Warriors played with 10 players for 55-plus minutes, and faced a Broncos team spraying shots all over the place, to earn the tie and a point towards the CCAA standings. Stan State remains in second place behind Sonoma State at 4-2-2 (8-3-2 overall) with 14 points, two behind the Seawolves.
Cal Poly Pomona, which put-up 29 shots (but just eight on goal), is now 6-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play. The Broncos had a 29-10 shots advantage and took 14 corner kicks (against the Warriors' zero). Pomona was charged with 21 fouls and five yellow cards as the Broncos physically pushed and shoved Warriors.
"I'm very proud of our effort today. To come back from down a goal and down a player is absolutely fantastic," head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "Not only did we play with incredible heart but we played tactically very smart soccer once we were down to 10 players. We were organized and effective on the counter attack."
Stanislaus State stayed composed with its style of play despite the fouls. Then the Warriors held together when
Nichole Donald was shown a red card for bumping an opponent from behind. The red card happened at 54:38 and the Warriors played the rest of the match, including two overtime periods, a player down.
Before the red card, the Warriors led 1-0 thanks to a
Jordan Moineau goal in the 14th minute. Her sixth goal of the year came from a free kick by
Gabby Squarcia perfectly placed in the middle of the box.
After the red card, the Warriors held strong for 10 minutes before Daisy Duran even the score at 65:28. Reanne Macon was credited with the assist on her cross. Duran would put her team up 2-1 with another score in the 71st minute. This time she finished a cross from Sydney Yates.
The Warriors would hang tough and battle back. In the 72nd minute,
Jade Poon was shoved in the box and the sophomore converted on the penalty kick attempt to make it 2-2.
Cal Poly Pomona took all four shots in the overtime periods and came up empty.
Stanislaus goalie
Chelsea Lewandowski recorded six saves, four of them in the second half while Pomona out-shot the Warriors 15-4 in the second.
"The back line had to be completely reorganized once Nichole was carded.
Mayah Chambers was incredible at left back. Chelsea,
Sabrina Williamson,
Nicole Larson and
Maryssa McDuffy really stepped up to organize everything," added Bolton.
The contest was a re-match of last season's NCAA West Region championship game, where the Warriors blanked Pomona, 2-0, to win the West title in Golden, Colo.
The Warriors will get a week off from conference action as they will only have one match next weekend in the form of a non-conference contest against UC Santa Cruz. The game against the Banana Slugs is Saturday at 7 p.m. at Warrior Stadium.
