TURLOCK — During a 17-minute stretch, the Warriors turned an one-goal match into a blow-out as they defeated UC Santa Cruz 6-0 Saturday night at Warrior Stadium.
Stanislaus State scored five second-half goals in the non-conference match to improve to 9-3-2 overall.
Mikayla Clifford finally scored two goals,
Kirsten Coleman also scored twice and
Gabby Squarcia had a goal with two assists to lead the Warriors.
"We played at a very high level against a organized and well coached opponent. It was great to see us click offensively in the second half," head coach Gabriel Bolton said.
Not much happened in the first half after the Warriors' quick score 90 seconds into the contest. Coleman gave the Warriors the 1-0 lead with her finishing touch from a Jade Poon shot off of the Sabrina Williamson corner kick.
Clifford, who scored seven goals in 2014, finally knocked in of her two this season. As one of the fastest players on the team, Clifford have had many chances but haven't been able to hit the back of the net. Saturday night, her two long blasts were pefectly placed out of the reach of UCSC goalie Athena Del Rosario. Clifford's first goal was a 20-yard blast from the top of the box after getting a pass-back from Jade Poon. Clifford's second goal was launched from about 25 yards out from the far side of the field.
Coleman netted her second score on the night, sixth of the year, in between the two Clifford goals that made it 3-0 in the 57th minute.
"The goals tonight were absolutely fantastic. Our forwards have been working hard on their finishing and it was good to see it pay off," Bolton added.
Clifford's first score, which gave Stan State a 2-0 lead, came at 48:45. When Squarcia scored her goal, the Warriors' sixth, it was at 65:42, capping the five-goal rally within a 16-minute, 57-second stretch. Squarcia's goal came less than a minute after Gabriela Vargas' header score from Squarcia's corner kick. Squarcia also assisted on Clifford's second goal.
Stanislaus completely dominated the second half — not just with the goals, but also on shots as the Warriors out-shot the Banana Slugs, 12-0 (17-2 final).
UC Santa Cruz (3-9-2) goalkeeper Del Rosario had four saves. The Warriors will resume California Collegiate Athletic Association play next week, starting with a match at first-place Sonoma State on Friday. Next Sunday, they will trek up to Arcata to take on Humboldt State.
